Unlike in some European countries, such as Belgium, France or Italy, there is currently no compulsory vaccination in this country, but recommendations.

In order to enable as many people as possible to have access, the free child vaccination program for children under the age of 15 was set up around 20 years ago. It includes the most important childhood diseases, pneumococcus and many more. “For the most part, these are also very well accepted, for example against polio (polio), FSME (tick-borne encephalitis) or tetanus (tetanus). Hardly anyone would think of refusing them,” confirms social medicine specialist Prof. Michael Kunze, Public Health Institute Med Uni Vienna.

According to the Austrian Health Survey 2019, three quarters of the people interviewed stated that they had an upright vaccination status against tetanus. 62% were protected from TBE.
“With travel vaccinations, the interest is even greater than the necessity. For many, it is part of the adventure”, said Prof. Kunze. The situation is completely different, however, when it comes to immunization against influenza; up to now, less than 10% of people have been vaccinated against influenza. “Here the attitude has changed. This year there is a great deal of interest”.
